Beauty is More than Skin Deep

Skin Deep Safe Cosmetics DatabaseOne of the great tips I got from Gorgeously Green is to check out all of your beauty, hair care, and personal hygiene products on Skin Deep: the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database.

They rate your lotions and potions, including children's products like sunscreen, shampoo, diaper creams, and more.  If you want to know what goes into the rating, they also provide a detailed report.  They'll even note if the company has signed the compact for safer cosmetics and if they test on animals.  Speaking of our furry friends, they have tips for selecting pet products, too.  Researching the products is free, and some even have user ratings.

My husband thinks I'm going insane because he's been finding deodorants and shampoos throughout the house labeled in permanent marker with their "risk level," but as a pregnant mama, I feel a whole lot better knowing that our daily use products contain no known toxins.

I threw out our high-risk items, kept some of the moderate-risk items to use up, and purchased new low-risk organic natural care products at my local healthfood store or, if the local store doesn't have what I'm looking for, I go to the natural store at drugstore.com.  I appreciate that shipping is free over $49, which is easy to do because they have excellent prices on all sorts of grocery staples, including organic toddler snacks from Earth's Best.

Right now drugstore.com has some amazing deals to help clean out your cabinets and cleanse your body:
