Need a good laugh? Pre-order Steve Almond’s (Not that You Asked): Rants, Exploits, and Obsessions.
A collection of essays that would qualify as TMI (too much information) if it wasn’t so hysterical, (Not that You Asked) is a nice dose of guilt-free schadenfreude…because Almond not only volunteers these vulnerable, honest, and embarrassingly amusing stories, he actually seems to revel in sharing them.
Almond is the madcap blogger behind Baby Daddy and the author of Candyfreak: A Journey through the Chocolate Underbelly of America. Although Baby Josie is, of course, the real star of the blog (and ohmygosh is she a cutie…and I know from cute babies), Almond is genuinely enjoyable to read and has more to say about life than his irreverent, yet tender stories about fatherhood.
Although Almond refers to himself, tongue in cheek, I suspect, as a Bohemian writer, he is just about as edgy as The Wiggles. Profanity, sex, and out-of-wedlock conceptions are generally par for the course in popular culture today…but Almond’s graphic language may turn off some readers.
Almond is at his best when he drops the schtick and is honest and real. Anyone who grew up any time in the last decade will recognize the awkward coming of age energy that animates Almond’s stories and rants. He bares all for your amusement, so you watch and laugh from a safe distance.
If you ever run into Steve, make sure to listen to his rants…not that you asked, but you should…because Steve Almond is HI-larious.
If you want to win a signed copy or a CD of the author reading his book, you can post a Steve-like rant of no more than 500 words by August 17, 2006. Head on over to the Best Rant Contest for full rules and details.
