Help a Mother Out made it Mother’s Day all month long in May.
Diaper drive events were held in San Francisco, San Mateo, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tucson, Phoenix, Chicago, Kansas City, New York City, Riverhead (Long Island, NY), New Haven, and Seattle.
Clean diapers can make a huge difference for low-income families. A mother who wishes to send find work needs clean diapers to bring her child to daycare. And babies who sit in dirty diapers are at higher risk for health complications and even abuse. HAMO seeks to break this cycle.
My friends and I gathered diapers throughout the month and hosted a Mothers’ Night In at Tara Arichabala’s house with wine from Osprey’s Dominion and cheese from The Village Cheese Shop.
We also hosted a public “Craft for a Cause” event at The Garden of Eve, an Organic Farm in Riverhead. Oriental Trading Company supplied the spring crafts and Pirate Brands supplied the delicious Pirate’s Booty (a favorite of my daughter’s and her friends).
We raised a little over 1,000 diapers for Volunteer 4 Long Island (part of Matters of the Heart), which will distribute the diapers to local shelters.
The kids had a fun time crafting, snacking, climbing play structures, and riding on the tractor!
And we raised a lot of awareness about this vital need. People who were out on that beautiful day stopped by to learn about the need for diapers and how they could help.
You can help, too! Spread the word, organize your own diaper drives, and donate supplies to your local shelters and food pantries, or donate online through Help a Mother Out.
