One of my goals is to involve my kids in the kitchen more in 2011.
Not only does cooking with kids encourage them to try healthier food, it also helps them better understand our food chain, learn science, and practice mathematical measuring skills.
Frigidaire has teamed up with Jennifer Garner and Chef Mary Sue Milliken to get families preparing and enjoying nutritious foods together. And Frigidaire will donate $1 to Save the Children for each time you visit the Kids’ Cooking Academy between 1/18/11 and 4/25/11. Check out the Frigidaire Kids’ Cooking Academy to find out more.
Some of the easiest recipes to make with young kids are dips and soups. You can even designate a “soup day” to prepare a big batch and freeze.
Here’s a fun one for brunch, a plastic bag omelet: beat 2 eggs and pour into a resealable bag; add any cheese or veggies you want in an omelet; shake and seal tightly; boil for about 12 minutes; open and slide out your omelet.
Another great choice for toddlers and preschoolers is decorating wholewheat flatbread “pizzas”–make smiley faces, animals or just have fun adding veggies and cheese.
If kids are reluctant to eat their veggies and fruits, homemade smoothies and ice pops are a fun way to celebrate warmer weather get them to eat healthy foods.
For St. Patrick’s Day, we made kiwi smoothie pops, inspired by these green popsicles at No Time for Flashcards. Our recipe was simple:
- 1 cup limeade
- 1 banana
- 3 kiwis
- 1 “yo baby” yoghurt
Liquify in your blender and then place in your freezer for about 2-3 hours, depending on how watery or thick the mixture is.
Our Frigidaire freezer has plenty of room for my cool “shooting star” popsicle molds and the slide-out shelves make it easy to check on our ice pops!
No matter what recipe we’re making, I’m happy that we have our Frigidaire appliances to make cooking and clean-up a breeze.
Disclosure: I was on the Frigidaire Mom Super Test Drive Team and Frigidaire sent me a gift card to buy supplies for healthy cooking with kids with a request that I share the Frigidaire Kids’ Cooking Academy with you. I’m always happy to share healthy recipes and cooking with kids ideas and it is a pleasure to help increase the donation for Save the Children.
