To celebrate the official beginning of summer, Redbox is asking moms of the blogging world, “What’s your favorite video game to play with your family?” In addition, they are rewarding fun-seeking families with the opportunity to win $10,000 as part of their Summer of Fun & Games Sweepstakes.
Video games are a tough sell to a lot of moms, and many of my friends have banned all video games from their homes. Video games have a reputation of encouraging negative or violent behavior, and of discouraging kids from active play outside in the fresh air.
I have happy childhood memories of playing Atari games with my brother, and I fondly remember buying the original Nintendo gaming system and the excitement we felt playing it for the first time. Perhaps my positive experience with video games as a child has influenced my moderate attitude towards gaming.
I wouldn’t want my children to play violent video games, but I value video games that teach strategy or encourage active play. My favorite video game to play with my family is Dance Dance Revolution for the Nintendo Wii. We don’t have to pick between playing a fun video game and being active–we can do both at the same time! Not only does it keep your heart rate up, but it can help teach your little ones coordination and balance skills while they’re keeping up with the steps that go along with the fun music and flashy scenery. There are no bad guys to kill or graphic images, it’s all in good, healthy fun. And my three year old sure gets a kick out of watching mom try to dance.
My husband is a pro at Dance Dance Revolution, and he can obtain near perfect scores even on expert level. I lack his athleticism and coordination, so I prefer the Disney version of Dance Dance Revolution. Since the Disney version was designed for kids, it gives only positive encouragement even if you miss a step (or many steps). My preschooler is too young to play, but he dances freestyle to the Disney music and enjoys himself while mommy exercises.
