When I come home from a long day after work, there’s nothing I like to do more than lay down on my bed, even if only for a few moments before I’m yanked off to the next chore. If I had to climb up a ladder to get to this cozy piece of heaven I’m sure I would be a very unhappy camper.
Rewind 20 or 25 years ago and the opposite of this was true. Why kids love bunk beds quite as much as they do is beyond me. There’s something rather magical about sleeping so close to the ceiling and as a parent, the amount of room that can be saved with a bunk bed is not something to be taken for granted.
Whether you have one, two, three or even more children, bunk beds are always a great choice. For the only child, a bunk bed can be used for sleepovers (an especially enjoyable novelty). If you have two or more children, every night turns into a sleepover and it’s a great way for them to overcome their fear of the dark or have a few minutes of sibling bonding before sleep. It also helps that buying bunk beds is usually is cheaper than buying two individual beds.
Another great way to save space in a small bedroom or apartment is by lofting a bed. Vertical space in a room is generally hard to use efficiently, but by lofting a bed, a desk, dresser or general play space can be found underneath. Beyond this, there are many options to turn the bed and underneath area into a huge themed play area, transforming a child’s bedroom into a dream come true. For example, slides can be added for easy escape out of the lofted bed or a princess theme can be added complete with turrets and pink ribbon.
Whereas bunk beds can be viewed as slightly childish, the best part about lofting a bed is that it is appropriate at any age. The right choice of material, color and placement can make a lofted bed seem mature and ideal for adult houses where space may be tight.
All in all, I count on bunk beds to not only benefit my own needs of space and money, but to make my children happy and comfortable in their own space in our house.
