Yachting may be an activity of wealthy celebs, but boating is a surprisingly affordable summer activity. Many resort areas offer affordable boat rentals by the hour or day.
As a child, I remember learning how to sail a boat with my father. Sailing requires focus and teamwork– which makes it an ideal family bonding activity. While I enjoy the serenity of sailing on a sunny day, my husband (pictured here) prefers the speed and excitement of personal watercrafts and jet skis.
DiscoverBoating.com has a boat selector tool, which helps you determine the right boat for you. For example, I prefer a lazy, relaxing day cruise, but my sportier friends like watersports like wakeboarding, waterskiing or tubing. When my children are older, I would love to rent a houseboat for a week or long-weekend to explore a boating destination.
The DiscoverBoating site has tips for aspiring boat owners on financing, insurance and even tips on how to convince your spouse to buy a boat. I’ll admit that the cost conversion tool surprised me by showing how affordable boating is compared to visiting a theme park or attending major league baseball games.
I would be more likely to rent a boat for use on annual vacations, and I used the research tools to price out boat rentals near us. Even on a modest budget, your family can experience the joy of boating this summer.
