As a child, I loved Reading Rainbow and hearing the show’s theme song still brings back happy childhood memories.

A Reading Rainbow
I loved the way classic Reading Rainbow episodes featured books with few bells & whistles, and I credit the show with inspiring a lifelong love of reading. Since I’m a fan, I was delighted to learn that Reading Rainbow has returned in the form of an educational iPad app.
I had the opportunity to meet LeVar Burton, the very popular host of this well-loved show, last week in NYC at the launch of the new FREE Reading Rainbow iPad App. The new app brings the classic Reading Rainbow philosophy into the digital age. As on the original TV show, the books are the stars. The App enhances the reading experience but does not detract from the author/illustrator’s original vision.
You can download the Reading Rainbow App on the iTunes store to receive one free book. After that, you would need to purchase a monthly subscription in order to access unlimited books. At just $29.99 for six months ($4.99 a month), this is a great deal. My 4 year old can read as many books as he wants, and there are multiple levels of play for kids of different abilities from pre-readers through preschoolers through school-aged children. On average, I spend between $5-$15 a month on ebooks and educational apps for my son, so the $5 subscription will actually be a money-saver for me given how important the iPad is to our daily reading/learning routine.

Disclosure: I attended the Reading Rainbow Launch Event where I received some promotional items and had the chance to meet LeVar Burton in person while snacking on an amazing cake from Cake Boss!
