I took my mother to see Mamma Mia with me and I was really looking forward to seeing the show live as I have seen the movie and wanted to compare the experience.
This global stage sensation, based on the songs of Swedish pop group ABBA, tells the story of a mother, a daughter, three possible dads and one unforgettable trip down the aisle. Bride-to-be Sophie wants nothing more than to have her biological father at her wedding … but she has no idea which of her mom’s three former boyfriends is the right guy. So she invites them all to the festivities with hopes of figuring it out, much to her fiercely independent mom’s chagrin. This infectiously fun tale of enduring love and friendship (which was also adapted into a popular movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried) features tons of hit ABBA songs, including “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” “Super Trouper,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Mamma Mia” and many more.
I have to say it was a little challenging at times to hear the singer’s lines over the orchestra music so I may have missed some things. Overall, the production and energy was fantastic and by the end everyone was out of their seats and dancing. My favorite song was “Slipping Through my Fingers” and I definitely teared up a bit thinking about when I was preparing to get married and all of the rush of emotions for me and my mom.
