As a mom, this is a sobering fact: Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 1 to 13 in the USA. We often take for granted plopping our kids in the car, buckling them up, and heading out for our day. Our babies (no matter how old they may be!) are precious cargo. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure they are safe, whether they are in our homes, in our cars or just walking to the park. A simple check of our car seats will go a long way in keeping our kids safe as our passengers!
The Ad Council and The Department of Transportation are highlighting these safety concerns during Child Passenger Safety week, September 14-20. This is the perfect week to use all resources possibly to make sure your kids are safely secured in your car. Head to SaferCar.gov/TheRightSeat to make sure your child is in the right kind of car seat for his or her height and weight. You can also check out this website to make sure you have installed your car seat correctly: Safercar.gov/parents/RightFit.htm. There will also be certified child passenger safety technicians inspecting car seats free of charge around the country. See if there is a car seat check event near you.
