I received a review copy of Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill a few weeks ago, and it didn’t disappoint.
The heroine Lucy Sweeney is scatterbrained and prone to mishaps. Formerly a producer on a prestigious news show, she’s now the stay-at-home mother of three children and a bit of a mess. Her house and car are a pigsty. Her looks are decidedly unglamorous. She wears pajamas when she drops her kids off at school and forgets to wash off her eye makeup, leading one mom to comment that she looks like a panda. She loses her keys, runs out of gas, and forgets about important school projects until the last minute. And that’s just the beginning.
At school, she befriends Yummy Mummy (a fit, glamorous mom whose car and home are kept immaculately clean) and clashes with Alpha Mum (one of those type-As obsessed with mommy excellence).
While there’s a little slummy mummy in all of us, few women are quite as disorganized as Lucy. (Seriously, who doesn’t at least update a basic calendar?) At times, Lucy becomes a caricature of a disorganized mother, but everyone can still relate to her because we all make mistakes and have moments where we feel we don’t measure up.
I’d read about Slummy Mummy for the first time in the pages of Vogue, which is a magazine I normally associate with those fit Yummy Mummies I see in the gym wearing full make-up with perfectly-coiffed hair at 7am.
There’s something about Yummy Mummies that makes us feel bad about ourselves. They barely break a sweat during group fitness classes, get every yoga pose perfect and look adorable in their Juicy Couture tracksuits. Frankly, they are the primary reason I decided to invest in my own fitness equipment and workout at home.
While it’s easy to envy the Yummy Mummies, the message behind Slummy Mummy is one of acceptance (of yourself) and appreciation (for what you have). And that is surprisingly sweet.
Well…are you a slummy mummy, alpha mom, yummy mummy, beta mom, hybrid mom, earth mother, slacker mom, or a sick-of-labels mom? Just leave a comment by July 27 telling us what kind of mom you are and why. We’ll pick a winner at random. Remember to leave a valid e-mail address or URL where we can reach you if you win.
Also, we have tons of other great contests on Mamanista! if you miss out on this one, including a very special giveaway to raise awareness about Congenital Heart Defects.
