In honor of Earth Day, we are making recycled crafts this month.
What can you do with a plastic Tropicana Orange Juice Jug?
Well, you can make a bird feeder, watering can, a cool ball and scoop game (encourages outdoor play), a whale bath or water table toy, or a doll house or car garage. You can even save a rainforest.
We started with a bird feeder since both my kids are bird-obsessed and this is a simple craft even for a toddler.
- Take a plastic juice or milk jug
- Cut a door in the flat side opposite the handle
- Paint and decorate (I learned a tip: if you do not have acrylic paint, you can make tempera paints stick by adding school glue to the mix…also colored tape and stickers work well, too!)
- Fill with bird seed and hang
My kids had so much fun painting the bird feeder and pouring in the seed–a great tactile and motor control learning experience plus tons of fun to boot!
Know what else you can do with a Tropicana jug (or carton)? You can save 100 square feet of rain forest.
Have you seen the points on the cartons? Well, you can redeem those points for discounts. I really love that that many of these are for experiences like children’s theater tickets (no waste! no clutter!). This month I decided to renew 9 of my points for saving 300 square feet of rainforest.
Each jug has three Juicy Rewards points and each point donated to help Rescue the Rainforest saves 33 1/3 sq. ft. of rainforest through a partnership between Tropicana and Cool Earth. In 2009, they saved 93,221,800 square feet of rainforest!
