Children need special nooks to call their own–an appropriately-sized, comfortable spot for playing and learning. Emerging readers especially appreciate a child-proportioned reading chair.
The Nordic Rocker is a great reading chair for the classroom or the home.
As part of the “Guidecraft Educators” program, I will be sharing some of their stellar educational products for the classroom and home, each month.
Assembly was very quick, although my package was missing the hex key or Allen wrench, this was a problem that was easily solved. I put the whole thing together in about 10 minutes.
For the literal-minded, like me, it is important to note that the Nordic Rocker does not “rock”. It is really more of a bouncer, which is perfect for our household. My two older children have been eying the baby’s bouncy seat and now they have one of their own.
The chair is very well-made and durable. It is recommended for up to 120 pounds but in the interest of giving a thorough review, I sat in it myself. Let’s just say I weight quite a bit more than 120 pounds and the chair was up to the challenge.
My daughter wanted the armrests to have some padding but my son found it quite comfortable.
From the adult point of view, I would prefer more options for the wood finish and padding cover.
There is also a good bit of evidence that many students (even up through college and beyond), imprint an idea better when they engage in physical or kinesthetic learning. Even adults trying to remember things can do this. For example, as you walk in the house, squeeze your shoulder and say, “My keys are in… (the dish, the drawer…wherever you keep them)”. If you do this several times, you may find you remember the location of your keys better.
This is also ideal for children who learn best while moving. A lot of young children are energetic and have great difficulty remaining perfectly still. Being able to bounce while remaining seated may help them focus.
Some children are especially drawn to physical activities. An educator can incorporate activities that suit a variety of learning styles and needs. However, there will still be times when learning requires a more serene environment. Providing kinesthetic learners with an opportunity for some motion may help avoid a misdiagnosis of ADHD and improve classroom management issues.
If you are looking for a child-sized reading chair with a little “bounce”, the Nordic Rocker will help kids spring into learning.
