Heidi comes out in a gorgeous dress that I could never ever wear and announces the challenge: Make a dress for Nina.
Not only is this an outfit for Nina but it also must be a “day to evening” look…for a fashion editor who would not be caught dead wearing the same outfit to the office and an evening industry event. And it must photograph well because it is going to be in an editorial photo shoot. Plus it will be in an advertisement on taxi cabs. Make it work, people!
Heidi comes out on stilts! I wish they hadn’t included so much of this in the previews but I guess with the public runway show it would have been hard to hide.
Frankly, I’m not sure how I feel about this challenge. It is more of a technical challenge for a costumer than a fashion design challenge. Playing with the proportions is somewhat relevant and the designers can take that back to their work. For the most part, though, this is basically a “design something pretty” challenge…but then make the skirt or pants really long…

When I heard the spoilers that the winner of this season of Project Runway would be “unexpected”, and I took a peak at the final collections, I thought the winner would be Andy South.
We spoke with Andy on the topic of his limited palette, Internet buzz that he lifted patterns from a book, concerns about losing his aesthetic during the final collection, and how he has grown as a designer…
I chatted with Project Runway’s Gretchen and found out that she is a smart, articulate businesswoman. Despite a reputation as the show’s “rhymes with witch”, Gretchen is adamant that she only talked about the other designers’ work, never attacking them on a personal level. Gretchen shared her thoughts about the final judging and why she was so happy to have Michael Kors in her corner. Above all else, it seems that Gretchen was a truly savvy reality-show contest.
What I really wanted to ask Gretchen is why does she design clothes that make 5’9″, beautiful, willowy, 20 year-old women look like pear-shaped, middle-aged women in mom jeans? But I couldn’t think of a non-confrontational way to phrase that.
So, this is what I asked her instead…
Lifetime gave me the opportunity to interview Michael Costello, who was the final Project Runway contestant to be eliminated before the finale at Fashion Week. I’m excited to tune in for the Finale, Part II, Thursday, October 28 at 9pm ET/PT.
His elimination is now the subject of great internet debate–why did he have to compete for a spot when he “won” the previous challenge? why was he eliminated over Gretchen, whose collection seemed to be more of a line and have less “wow” to it? and was his breakdown genuine?
How ironic that Christopher Collins, perhaps one of the sweetest, most down-to-earth, mellow, well-adjusted reality show contestant in the whole sordid history of the genre got the auf on what is perhaps the most over-the-top nasty Project Runway episode ever…
