Did you know that 3 in 5 U.S. public school teachers say students regularly come to school hungry? This week Share Our Strength released its’ 2012 survey of America’s teachers reporting on their experiences with hunger in the classroom and the findings show that hunger is a huge problem in this country. Get Wild! July is National Park and Recreation Month
Did you know that July is National Park and Recreation Month?
Having clean, well-equipped parks near our house has encouraged us all to be more active and to spend more time outdoors. My boys love visiting the park, and the playground with its twisty slides, bridges and swings is a favorite. I volunteered as a Parks & Recreation board member for a few years while I was serving on our local school board. In fact, my son now attends the soccer program that we discussed opening while I was on the park board.
Plan Toys Pull-Along Snail
We love the beautiful eco-friendly toys from Plan Toys. In fact, the sweet Pull-Along Snail inspired one of my son’s babysitters to write the following poem.
Share Our Strength: Summer Meals for Hungry Kids
Did you know that although more than 21 million children in the US get free or reduced-price school lunches, only 3 million get a free summer meal?
Most of us can probably count on our children being fed to their bodies’ content at any moment of any day. But millions of kids and parents face the summer with worry; the breakfasts and lunches being fed to them during school will be missing.

That’s why newborn screening is so important—even lifesaving. We’ve teamed up with Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for newborn screening, to spread the word.

Help Support First Book
We’ve enjoyed being a part of the Random House Read & Play Summer Fun Community and chatting with moms about their favorite books, how they encourage their children to read and the way they can use books to discuss difficult topics like bullying. We also talked about how much we treasure the time spent reading with our children– whether it’s snuggled up in bed, cuddling on the couch or sitting at the kitchen table. Reading with our children sets them up for educational success, but moms treasure children’s books because they strengthen our bond with our children.
